"To help alleviate these concerns, parents should educate their children about sexual intercourse, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. They should also educate their children about contraception. Parents of teenage mothers and putative (presumptive) fathers should try to best support their children during this difficult time. They should establish plans for the teens that include education, employment, and financial arrangements, living situations, child care, and more. Parents of both the mother and father should also determine how involved they wish to be with the pregnancy and child after birth. Presumptive fathers may request a deoxyribonucleic acid test, commonly called a DNA test, after the birth before assuming legal responsibility for the child. Parents of emotionally immature teenagers may wish to encourage alternatives such as adoption, in the best interests of the child."
