PHOTOSYNTHESIS
-
-
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction where light energy is transferred from the environment into the chloroplast. Taking in. This light energy breaks bonds in water and through various processes these molecules are rearranged to form glucose + oxygen.
-
-
RESPIRATION
-
-
aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration uses glucose and oxygen.
Word equasion= Glucose + oxygen ----> carbon dioxide + water
-
anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration- incomplete oxidation of glucose, so less energy is released (compared to aerobic respiration)
In animals (muscles cells)- glucose--> lactic acid. Happens during vigorous exercise, and the lactic acid can cause muscles to fatigue. After exercise breathing rate stays high to repay the oxygen debt (volume of O2 needed to break the lactic)
In plant/ yeast cells- glucose ---> carbon dioxide + ethanol. Used in bread making as the CO2 makes bread rise. Ethanol makes alcoholic drinks (e.g beer, wine). In yeast cells this is also called fermentation
RESPONSE TO EXERCISE
Why heart and breathing rate increase breath volume increases during exercise - muscles are contracting so more oxygen needs to be supplied to the muscle cells
