  - - - In Gatsby, the individual is often prioritised over any semblance of a group, the story is told from the lens of Nick who constantly fades in and out of groups while feeling isolated, ‘I was within and without’, Gatsby similarly isolates himself from his frequent parties. ‘I usually find myself among strangers because I drift here and there trying to forget the sad thing that happened to me’. From the descriptions of a young gatsby, we see a schedule that largely symbolises Benjamin Franklin's concept of the 'self made man'
      - Steinbeck subverts fitzgerald's promotion of the 'self made man' and individualism, and champions the collectivist culture, with the novel predicated on the idea of the family staying together and being stronger in that way, outcasts to the group are depicted negatively as having betrayed or abandoned the group with Steinbeck not portraying their stories, in contrast Casy who sacrifices himself for the group is not abandoned by the story. The family however is also an individual against the wider society with them often being targeted ‘We don’t want you goddam okies’
