The butterfly looks very different from the larva. They have longlegs, long, antennae and compound eyes. They fly by using their large colorful wings. They only life one or two weeks, but some of them hibernate during winter and may live several months.
Their eggs get laid and become food for the caterpillar. Eggs can be laid in spring and summer. They lay a lot of eggs so that the most can survive.
These larva will grow into a butterfly or a moth. The job of the caterpillar is to eat as much as he can. Caterpillar's can grow 100 times their size during this stage. It will grow up to 2 inches long in several weeks.
When the catepillar stop eating it become a pupa. The pupa will be hidden under a leave or brunch. They are protected by the coccoon. This stage can take a month or longer where the pupa develop a lot of cells. These cells will become the legs, wings, eyes and other parts of the butterfly.
