bioleaching
uses bacteria to separate metals from their ores eg. copper can be separated from copper sulfide this way. the bacteria gets energy from the bonds between the atoms in the ore, separating out the metal from the ore. the solution produced in the process, contains metal ions which can be extracted by electrolysis/ displacement with a more reactive metal
phytoextraction
ivolves growing plants in soil that contain metal compounds. plants cant use or get rid of metals so the gradually build up in leaves. the plants can be havested dried or burned in a furnace. The ash contaisn metal compounds from which metal can be extracted by electrolysis/ displacemnt reactions

scientists are looking in to ways to extract metal from low grade ores( ores that only contain small amounts of metal) or from waste that is currently produced when metals are extracted
traditional methods of mining are pretty damaging to the envirornment, these new methods of extraction have much smaller impact but they are slow
