MALFI ACT 1 - Coggle Diagram

- - - - he paints the brothers negatively from the very start of the play. Antonio aligns the cardinal with the devil, emphasising his corruption (as he's a religious figure, he should be far from satanic). he also implies that the cardinal uses his position of religious power for his own personal gain under the pretence that he is selfless
      - Antonio depicts Ferdinand as short tempered and impulsive, a contrast to his depiction of the calculated cardinal, but also implies Ferdinand is corrupt through his suggestion that he takes advantage of the court for his own vindictive use
    - - with the cardinal supposedly having 'flashes' that 'superficially hang on him', it is suggested that he has a false exterior that hides his true character, feeding into the idea he is corrupt and false.
      - the same is implied about Ferdinand, as Antonio observes 'what appears in him mirth is merely outside'
    - - they use bosola to do their dirty work, which emphasises the secrecy of their true characters, as they are distanced from their actions through him-- they are not affiliated with their crimes. the fact they also bribe him implies they use their ability to appoint people of power for their own personal gain and not for the benefit of the state.
