Issues and concern of Exam-Oriented Education System
Exam-oriented Education : System is Outdated
The Malaysian education system are influenced from the west such as British
During those time, the British education system were based mainly on examination form of evaluation
conventional public examination will only forces them to memorise some of the knowledges for the sake of passing the exam which sadly will be irrelevant as soon as they step out of the secondary school
Exam-oriented system stop teachers from serving their true purposes
Teachers will be held back from giving lessons appropriate to what is best for the students.
Extra burden for teachers to handle paperwork of any post-examination; marking, grading, finalising.
Desperation for the teachers to ensure that the students will pass through the exam will make them lose passion and commitment in their job.
Exams can generate depression
During exams, the child may fear receiving bad grades, which destroy their happiness. A distressed child is more likely to get depressed, and this can confirm to be very harmful to their health.
Depression originated by exams can have a very adverse impact on the child’s being.
Stress and anxiety are not the only difficulties caused by exams.
Students and teachers only focus on exam
the KPI evaluation system also forces the teachers to educate the students with the wrong intention, to make sure that the students will score in the exams so that the teachers could get a positive KPI evaluation.
Students normally just concentrate on scoring in their tests. There’s the misconception that the higher number of As indicate the person’s intelligence.
For instance, friends and families often compare to see who has the most As to determine who’s done well.
While this is obviously not the correct way to gauge a student’s ability, students in higher institution of learning should change their mindset and remember that their capabilities are not narrowed down to exam papers.
Comparison among students/children
Example: A student who scores a D on their math exam is expected to be compared with those who score an A.
A significant problem caused by examinations is the comparison that is created between children/students by teacher or parents. They may feel demotivated or left out by being compared with their peers.
The learning capacity is different for every child. Some students learn new concepts efficiently, while others are more expert at non academic skill such as sports.
Exam-oriented system limits students critical thinking
The most obvious one is that exam-oriented education lacks critical-thinking training, because there is always a “correct” answer to an exam question.
And the mindset of looking for the right answer is ingrained into students’ mind.
As a result, students are not comfortable and are less likely to propose innovative solutions and challenge textbooks or their teachers.
