Value-added activities are production activities which increase the value of the product or service. Examples of value-added activities are direct material, direct labor, direct overhead, engineering costs, research and development on production changes, modifying the process to meet customer specific needs, etc. Non-value added activities are those which do not increase the product value or service. Examples are warehousing, re-work costs, material handling, etc. Conducting the final assembly of wooden furniture and painting newly manufactured automobiles are both value-added activities which add to the value of the end product.
