Chapter 13 Arthropoda
Chelicerata & Myriapoda
General Characteristics
Ecdysis(Molting) steps: 1. the
old cuticle becomes thinner
/softer as salts are drawn from it.
epidermis grows and forms a new epicuticle
. 3.enzymes
dissolve old procuticle and forms new procuticle
. 4. body
fluids expand to get rid of old epicuticle.
molting is controlled by hormones. x organs produce molt-inhibiting hormone. y organs produce molting hormone.
Exoskeleton:
epicuticle
(contains sclerotin),
procuticle
(made of chitin), and
epidermis.
Generally: triploblastic. reduced coelom. OCS. Respiration: aquatic-gills. terrestrial-tracheal system or diffusion. Dioecious.
Metamorphosis:
egg, larva, pupa, adult..
Subphylum Chelicerata & Myriapoda
