Incubation period
1-5 days
●Usually, 2-3 days
Mode of transmission
Direct mode:faecal –oral
●Indirect mode: faeces from infected people deposited into the water resource or food washed with contaminated water
Pathophysiology
●After ingestion of vibrioe cholerae, it binds with the epithelium of the ileum and jejunum
●Then it produces toxin that causes an increase in the flow of water and electrolytes(production of toxins)
Additional virulence factors is required to survive the host’s defense and to adhere to the intestinal mucosa
●Large numbers of bacteria have to be ingested
Colonization is required to enhance attachment to the specific receptors
Diagnostic tests
Stools/faeces collection for culture
●Rapid tests- spotting an outbreak early.( Crystal VC Dipstick Test )
