Presents congress with his 21-point plan for reconservation

Fair deal, congress rejected measure for cereal healthcare and education but did pass the National School Lunch Act

Recession hits US economy- GDP declines by 12.7%

1946

Signs the employment act-gives returning soldiers a job

Introduces a price control bill but congress made so many amendments it had no power, he tried to veto the amendments but was warned against is as it was the only possible deal

Council of economic advisors set up in case action needed to be taken

By the end of 1946, the economy was stabilised

1947

Construction of levitowns

Vetoes taft-Harley act

Protected employees rights from unfair practises of unions

1948

Desegregates armed forces, calls for anti-lynching laws, legislation to end poll tax

1949

Proposes fair deal, only fulfills 3: increases public housing, raises minimum wage and extended social security

1950

Signs social security amendments- expands coverage and increase benefits, revenue act

McCarthy charges the state department of employee in 205 known communists

1952

Vetoes the McCarran-Walter immigration act- restriction of US immigration but veto overrode by congress, executive order directing secretary of commerce to seiize control of steel mills to prevent union strikes- court and public opinion opposed him
