Trudgill Norwich (1974)
Trudgill looked at the ways of pronouncing the sound at the ends of words like walking and talking /n/ and /ng/.
He set up his study to explore the different ways people spoke and how they pronounced things. He looked at whether age and gender had any impact. He also got people to converse normally and then read words from a list to see if it varied. He found in all social classes the more careful the speech the higher the likelihood /ng/ is used instead of /n/.
Vivian De Klerk (2005)
Young people should have the freedom to challenge linguistic norms. They need to establish themselves as different and they need to belong (community of practice)as members of a group that uses different language than parents/adults).
