One Pillar Pagoda
History
-
In 1049, construction began. In the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong, it was renovated, built Linh Chieu Lake and decorated a gilded lotus building at the top of the column. Hidden in the lotus building is a purple painted temple, sculpted with a godbird on the roof, inside there is a gilded statue of Guan Shiyin.
Yanhuu Temple is a temple representing the lotus that Guanyin Buddha gave to King Ly Thai Tong during a dream.
In 1954, French troops planted explosives to destroy the pagoda before withdrawing from Hanoi. In 1955, the State rebuilt the pagoda according to the design of architect Nguyen Ba Lang. However, the scale is only encapsulated in a small pagoda.
Architect
The whole pagoda is a system of wooden slats combined together into a square pavilion, erected on a large stone pillar, like a lotus tower rising in the middle of Linh Chieu Lake. The walls of the lake are also made of glazed crockery tiles.
The roof of the pagoda is roofed with brick-red scale tiles with four curved roof corners. Prominent on the roof of the pagoda is the exquisitely carved "moon adoration dragon", the image that brings the harmony of the universe and calms the sacredness of the temple.
In the premises of One Pillar Pagoda, there are also three views, with a diaphragm carved with three words "Yanhuu Temple", which was originally started with the Yanhuu Pagoda complex in the past and has collapsed, but was recently rebuilt to expand the scale of One Pillar Pagoda
