To what extent is memory recall influenced by emotion?
Factors
Sensitivity of person
We cant't test this or mental disorders ethically
Emotion at scene
Would we simulate a crime scene
state-dependent retrieval cues
Pre existing mental diorders (IED, BPD, etc.)
context dependent retrieval cues
Could context be an independent variable?
Research design type
Experiment: Create an experiment in which participants watch a happy video or a sad video, then both watch the same video of someone committing a crime and they are asked which person did the crime in a sequential line up.
Problem
Some participants may not be affected by the videos. The happy and sad videos may evoke other emotions rather than the ones we want.
We need to justify the lineup we choose
Advantages
Very clear results, easy to control
Observational - Observe an angry argument and then wait a few days and ask the people involved to recall what happened in as much detail as possible. Then observe a calm debate and ask 6he people involved to do the same thing. Then compare the difference in their memory recall
Problem
How are we going to find people in an angry argument. I mean like yeah it works but i feel like its not perfect
Also how will you ensure that the people you are observing have the same memory abilities
Arguments and calm debates probably have different content, so how do you plan on assessing the results
Advantages
Very raw emotions which means it may have a genuine result
Qualitative: Could be a Delphi Interview with data analysts, policemen or memory psychologists discussing the impact of emotions
Problem
This only allows us to see preexisting information that experts already know. There is no new research involved. Doesn.t allow any information of how it affects real people. No new research is being done
Advantages
Allows information to be collected on how emotion affects memory recall. Allows a discussion to take place.
Independent variable: video watched beforehand (emotional state)
Dependent variable
Objective quantitative: if they identified the suspect correctly or not
Subjective quantitative: how they rated their confidence for each suspect
Qualitative: how did they feel their emotions affected their confidence/choices
Sample size: 2 groups of ten participants
Problems
Not enough people to get a good enough sample
Is the group randomised? It should be
Extraneous variables
Participant variable:
Gender, Age, Pre existing mental disorders, Quality of memory, Strength of emotions, level of sleep, concentration level
Situational variable:
Distractions in the room, temperature of the room, lighting, odours in the room, outside noise
Constant variable:
Experiment is administered in the same room with same conditions, use of headphones, same videos shown to everyone
Ethical considerations
By directly playing with states of participant's emotions, we need to be careful that we don't negatively affect their wellbeing
Crimes are traumatic. We need to ensure that participants are well of mind and are aware of the fact that the accident is staged
Give them the option to pull out of the experiment at any time
