Chapter 12: Psychiatric Disorders
Medications for anxiety disorders
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
raises serotonin levels, which are known to be deficient in many psychiatric disorders
Benzodiazepine
binds to GABA receptors allosterically, which boosts levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters like GABA, which decreases the activity of neurons in areas of the brain that feel anxious.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Uncontrollable recurring thoughts and repeated compulsions to relieve obsessions
Basal ganglia
Works with cortex to control our ability to move and think and conduct habits
Involved in brain reward system, mediated by dopamine, serotonin, glutamate.
Disrupted signaling between basal ganglia and cortex causes ritualistic behaviors
Treatment
SSRIs
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Deep brain stimulation
Implanted electrodes emit high frequency electrical pulses to rests abnormal nerve firing
Panic disorder
Sudden unexpected bouts of intense irrational fear and frightening physical symptoms like difficult breathing, sweating
Half of patients also have mood disorders like depression or bipolar
