PROTEINS - Coggle Diagram

- - - - ELASTIN - is a protein that is similar to collagen and is the chief constituent of elastic fibers. Elastin is a protein that exists as fibers in the extracellular spaces of many connective tissues.
        EXAMPLES: Mussel byssus threads and spider dragline silks
        
        KERATIN - fibrous structural protein of hair, nails, horn, hoofs, wool, feathers, and of the epithelial cells in the outermost layers of the skin. A type of protein found on epithelial cells, which line the inside and outside surfaces of the body.
        EXAMPLES: hair, wool, nails. hooves, claws, horns
  - - - GLOBULIN - are group of proteins in your blood and they are made in your liver by your immune system.
        EXAMPLES: immunoglobulin and cryoglobulin
        
        HISTONES - a protein found in chromosomes. histones are highly basic proteins abundant in lysine and arginine residues that are found in eukaryotic cell nuclei
        EXAMPLES: H1 (or H5), H2A, H2B, H3 and H4
- - - - PROTONES - a particle with a positive electrical charge, forming part of the nucleus of an atom.
        
        PEPTIDES - any of various amides that are derived from two or more amino acids by combination of the amino group of one acid. Peptides are a short chain of amino acids. Peptides are smaller than proteins.
        EXAMPLES: hormone oxytocin, glutathione, melittin, the pancreatic hormone insulin, and glucagon
  - - - PROTEANS - A protein that has been slightly modified by water, dilute acid, or enzymes, but not modified to the extent of a metaprotein.
        
        METAPROTEINS - a hydrolytic derivative of protein, insoluble in water but soluble in dilute acids or alkalis. a metaprotein may contain peptides from multiple proteins.
        EXAMPLES: albuminate
- - - - MUCOPROTEINS - a protein that yields carbohydrates as well as amino acids on hydrolysis. Mucoproteins are any of various complex conjugated proteins that contain polysaccharides and occur in body fluids and tissues.
        EXAMPLES: acetylcysteine, mucus, antibiotics, struvite, enzymes etc.
        
        LIPOPROTEINS - are complex particles that have a central hydrophobic core of non-polar lipids, primarily cholesterol esters and triglycerides. Lipoproteins play a major role in the metabolism of all types of tissues.
        EXAMPLES: high-density lipoproteins (HDL), known as “good” cholesterol, and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol.
        
        PHOSPHOPROTEINS - any of a group of conjugated proteins, especially casein, in which the protein molecule is bound to phosphoric acid. Phosphoprotein containing chemically bound phosphoric acid.
        EXAMPLES: milk protein casein and ovo-vitellin of egg yolk.
        
        CHROMOPROTEINS - A conjugated protein, such as hemoglobin, that contains a pigmented prosthetic group, such as heme.
        EXAMPLES: chromoproteins include flavoproteins, hemoglobin and cytochromes with iron, rhodopsin with vitamin A, hemocyanin and cytochrome oxidase with copper, chloroplastins with chlorophyll, biliproteins with phycobilins.
        
        METALLOPROTEINS - a large group of proteins containing one or more atoms of metal bound to specific sites in the polypeptide chain. Metalloproteins account for nearly half of all proteins in biology.
        EXAMPLES: Hemocyanine, catechol oxydase, and tyrosinase are copper metalloproteins involved in dioxygen storage and activation for oxidation processes.
