Polarity
Water has a polarity, a positive and negative pole, this allows the water to be adhesive to other objects with the opposite polarity. The polarity is caused by the formation of atoms within the molecule. The hydrogen ends of the molecule are positive and the oxygen end is negative.
-
Adhesion
Adhesion is a water property is that water not only sticks to itself, but also the surrounding objects. Adhesion in water is the ability for waters to disassemble its molecules to be stuck to other surfaces.
-
Electronegativity
Electronegativity is a chemical property that describes the tendency of an atom or a functional group to attract electrons toward itself.
-
Cohesion
Cohesion refers to the attraction of molecules to other molecules of the same kind. It is the opposite of adhesion. Cohesion is the action or property of molecules adhering to one another due to mutual attraction. The force of attraction between two comparable substances is known as the cohesion force.
-
Capillary action
Capillary action is an action that water performs. The water's adhesiveness allows it to move within narrow spaces without the help of an outside force such as gravity and air resistance.
Generally is defined as he movement of water within the spaces of a porous (small and object with holes) material due to the forces of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension.
Surface tension
Surface tension is the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid, which tends to minimise surface area
Examples could be: Small insects such as the water strider can walk on water because their weight is not enough to penetrate the surface.
