conquistadors

Cortés
defeated the great
Aztec Empire based in Mexico.
Led an expedition of
11 ships and 500 men to Mexico in 1519.
Native tribes who were previously defeated by the Aztecs helped him.
They were against the heavy taxes and slavery that the Aztecs put on them
Cortés led
100,000
men against the Aztecs. He
destroyed
their capital city,
Tenochtitlan
&
rebuilt it as Mexico City.
Forced the
Aztecs
to
work as slaves in mines and fields.
Pizarro
conquered the
Inca empire in Peru.
Captured and killed
the Inca emperor,
Atahualpa
.
Took control of the Inca capital, Cuzco
in the Andes Mountains.
Was killed by his own soldiers
(as the Spaniards began fighting themselves over treasures).
Gold and silver was mined
by the Incas for the Spaniards for the
next 100 years

Spain became a very wealthy country.
Spanish ships
travelling from the New World (bringing the gold and silver)
were attacked by English ships
, which
led to a war between the two countries.
Spaniards
also conquered the South-West of North America near New Mexico and California

Los Angeles, Las Vegas
