        Abolitionist John Brown took a much more extreme approach to stop the spread of slavery. He launched his raid in 1859, many of his men were killed or captured, even himself. The letter he wrote before his hanging left Southerners in fear.
        
        The Supreme court decided African Americans were not considered citizens. They also decided that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional.
        
        This incident was similar to the Missouri Compromise, dividing states into anti-slavery and free halves in an attempt to keep the nation happy. People’s decisions on both sides were affected by the book: Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Kansas-Nebraska Act
        
        Kansas-Nebraska Act created Kansas and Nebraska and allowed the settlers to decide whether the states would be pro or anti-slavery.
      - The Irish Potato Famine started with an unknown potato disease that killed many potatoes, followed by many more diseases, fungi, and other blights causing a large lack of potatoes. The Famine officially ended in 1852, causing the population to drop from 8 million to 4.5 million.
