Genetics

-
-
-
Alleles - different versions of genes. Could be eye color, hair color, skin color etc.
-
-
Phenotype
- What you have as a trait
- EX: red hair, blue eyes, can roll your tongue, etc.
Genotypes (AA, Aa or aa):

Protein synthesis
The process of using DNA’s instructions to create a protein. Proteins control the majority of processes in the body.
→ Melanin is the protein produced to cause skin colorization.
Transcription -
-
-
mRNA is single stranded and much shorter than DNA therefore mRNA can leave the nucleus (DNA cannot leave the nucleus)
-
-
Mutations
-
Substitution -
-
-
Nonsense: results in an early STOP codon = short, usually nonfunctional, protein
-
-
Melanin
-
-
-
Albinism - occurs because the enzyme (protein), tyrosinase, is not created/not functional.
This means the molecule responsible for making the melanin pigment is not present in those individuals = no melanin production
Function is to absorb UVR to prevent DNA damage
Folate damage (temporary infertility, heart conditions, pregnancy complications and birth defects)

Calcium plays important roles in bone strength, nerve communication, muscle contraction, and activating blood clotting factors
Natural selection
Rock Pocket Mice
Initially, light colored mice had a selective advantage over dark colored mice because the visual predators could only see the dark colors and prey upon those mice. (Light are camouflaged)
-
-
Over hundreds or thousands of years, the number of dark colored mice increased because the gene to code for dark fur was a selective advantage
Lava flowed, cooled, and turned the surface of the environment dark colored = dark colored mice now had the selective advantage.
Gene flow (aka migration): if mice populations live in close proximity, the mice can migrate into a new population changing the allele frequencies = change the frequency of light vs. dark mice.
-
is the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
