Causes of the Civil War
Economic Factors
Long Term rural unrest
-
Land ownership concentrated in small number of people
- During the 19th century there was a great deal of former royal and church land
- For example in Córdoba province (southern Spain) 7% of landowners controlled 52% of the land.
- Rural wealth and landholding were still unevenly distributed
unrest after 1931
- April 1931 Spain became a republic, rising hopes of landless labourers of the south
- agrigan reforms: working hours reduced + overtime had to be payed + landowners forced to cultivate all usable land + land being redistributed to landless workers
- impact on wealthy landowners dependent on cheap labour
- led to disputes
- peasants also unhappy since between 1931-33 only 10% of land was redistributed --> republican police shot 19 peasants
- 1933 - creation of a coilition dominated by landowners which reversed everything ( working- hours legistlation not enforced + land returned)
