Tess
Tess's shame of Sorrow/having a baby (page 89-92 in book). Result of Alec's sexual assault, illegitimate child.
Unconditional love of Sorrow (p92-93): within society's view, an illegitimate child is damned to Hell, by baptising it, Tess is attempting to save her baby. As someone who is not a religious authorities figure, she is likely transgressing acceptable religious behaviour and could be punished.
