Many new corporal punishment measures were introduced to extinguish the patriotic fire in revolutionary soldiers who were arrested and exiled to Con Dao.
Over 100 years, about 20,000 patriotic soldiers of many generations of Vietnamese were imprisoned, tortured and sacrificed here.
Every day, about 20 prisoners died and more than 1,000 people stayed here forever.
A place to train the qualities and will of revolutionary soldiers in the resistance wars against the French and Americans.
The 1954 Geneva Agreement was successfully signed, the French colonialists withdrew their troops, and Con Dao fell into the hands of the Saigon government.

The French colonial government and the Republic of Vietnam built 127 cells, 42 cells and 504 isolated cells (also known as tiger cages) in Con Dao.
After 1975, the function of the prison system in Con Dao was dissolved.
