Descartes' primary focus was on a defining a specification for geometry's "exactness of reasoning"-necessary for construction of finite curves. For Descartes, there was not yet a vision for use of infinitesimals in the construction of curves. In his lifetime, Descartes had been incapable of interpreting those elements of mathematical reasoning that made it possible for Newton and Leibniz to develop the infinitesimal calculus to come.
