Imtiaz Dharker (Poet)
Born in Pakistan but grew up in Glasgow
Most poems consist of themes of identity and home
Poems often reflect how she has conflicting identities between Scotland and Pakistan
Dharker wrote a collection of poems called 'The terrorist at my table' where tissue is the first of the poems in the collection- it acts like a preface to the main theme of fundamentalism (the abuse of power)
Poems to compare
London
Similarities
Human power is oppressive and restrictive- London says "mind forged manacles" and Tissue says "borderlines"
Both poets are critical of material wealth and power- London the streets are described as 'Chartered' and in Tissue money 'flies our lives like paper kites'
Differences
In London Blake simply observes the change and corruption, shown by the cyclical structure of starting with 'Marks of weakness' and ending with 'Blights with plague', whereas in Tissue Dharker aims to change the corruption by suggesting that paper is 'what could alter things'
Key quotes
‘Borderlines’
Shows the restrictions she has faced throughout her life due to having different beliefs
Shows the oppression she faces
She cannot move freely and express herself truly
Mental borderlines on what she can and can’t believe
‘Fly our lives like paper kites’
Simile- symbolises how futile life is when you nothing means anything to you
Shows how easily people can spend money
Makes people questions the value of money and what it truly means to be wealthy e.g wealthy is family and love as well as economic wealth
‘What could alter things’
Suggests that paper could change the corruption
The information held on paper has the knowledge and information to help stop corruption and negative change
After this quote, Dharkers poem may be a list of paper that could end the corruption
Structure/ form
form- a allegory, meaning it is a poem that as a different or deeper meaning
could have the hidden meaning to reveal the transience of life
written in quatrains- shows the regiment within human power and how restrictive power can be
however, the quatrains are undermined by the use of free verse and enjambment which show that there can be freedom even within regiment
