-
Pros

External recruitment
-
-
Cons
-
-
Will have only seen a candidate at recruitment - might not be representitive of what they are like at work.
Costs
Cost of advertising the vacant post - adverts may be placed in specialist magazines or papers to attract the right staff, or the business could use sites such as LinkedIn to reach a large number of specialists, both of which are expensive.
-
Shortlisting and assessing candidates - could be done by existing staff, which costs money as they can't do their usual job, the more senior the staff involved in the more expensive.
Travel expenses - for interview candidates or for sending existing staff to recruitment fairs to talk to potential candidates.
Training costs - may have a period where the new employee shadow the role of the person leaving the firm. Meaning the business will have to pay 2 sets of wages for the same role.
If the person appointed isn't suitable or not effectively trained then they may leave the job, increasing the firms labour turnover, which means the business will have to do the process again.
Training
Induction
The employee will receive an introduction to the business, as well as more information about their job role and how to do their job.
Needs to be effective as if it isn't then the employee could make mistakes which cost the business money.
If they employee isnt fully supported at the beginning in their new role then they could become demotivated and unable to work effectively.
On-the-job
Most suitable where practical skills are being taught, providing its safe to do so in a work environment, e.g. picking stock in a warehouse.
-
-
Off-the-job
Appropriate when employees need to know general information about the business or its procedures. Also useful for when employees are learning a new skill that would be difficult to learn in a real work environment e.g. learning how to manage people.
