Cultural diversity in MNCs
Types of Multiculturalism
Domestic
Multicultural and diverse workforce that
operates in the MNC's home country
Group
Cultural faultline team: A small number of subgroups (multicul- tural team). This is a particularly chal- lenging configuration and we will talk more about why this is so in a later step.
Token team: Everyone except one person
has the same culture (multicultural team).
Heterogenous team: A mix of cultures
on the team (multicultural team).
Homogenous team: Everyone has the same culture (also known as a monocultural team).
Advantages of Diversity
Can prevent groupthink: Social conformity and pressures on individual members of a group to conform and reach consensus
Can be very effective team
under right conditions
Tasks requiring innovativeness
Activities must be determined by the stage of team development
Can enhance creativity, lead to better decisions, and result
in more effective and productive performance
Problems Associated with Diversity
Perceptual problems: When culturally diverse groups come together, they often bring preconceived, erroneous stereotypes with them
Inaccurate biases
Attitudinal problems: May cause a lack of cohesion that results in the unit’s inability to take concerted action or to be productive
Inaccurate communication
