The Cold War=NATO’s main role was to counter the Warsaw Pact, established by Eastern European countries in 1955. These included countries like East Germany,Romania and Hungary, along with the USSR.There was never direct conflict between the Warsaw Pact and NATO. However, the division was best symbolised through the building of the Berlin Wall. Churchill said, in 1946, “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an ‘iron curtain’ has descended across the continent.” In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, which increased tension and led to an arms race, in which the USSR and USA raced to build up their supply of nuclear weapons. However, by 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev, a more relaxed Soviet leader who was happy to negotiate with NATO, took control of the USSR. The Cold War was coming to an end.
