Term: Immunity that is present at birth and lasts a person's entire life
Adaptive system
Definition: attack and destroy foreign invaders and are able to prevent disease in the future :
Term: To destroy invading pathogens and any toxic molecules they produce

Lymphatic & Immune system
Lymphatic system
Definition: The tissues and organs that produce, store, and carry white blood cells that fight infections and other diseases
Term: Lympho
Immune system
Deification: A complex network of organs, cells and proteins that defends the body against infection, whilst protecting the body's own cells
Term: A complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they make that helps the body fight infections and other diseases
Humoral response & Cellular
Humoral response
Definition: Mediated by antibody molecules that are secreted by plasma cells
Term: The immune response involving the transformation of B cells into plasma cells that produce and secrete antibodies to a specific antigen
Cellular response
Definition: The way that cells respond to signals in their environment
Term: Any process that results in a change in state or activity of a cell
Lymphatic organs
Thymus
definition: A small organ that lies in the upper chest under the breastbone
Term: An organ that is part of the lymphatic system, in which T lymphocytes grow and multiply
lymph nodes
Definition: A small bean-shaped structure that is part of the body's immune system
Term: Swollen glands
Spleen
Definition: A fist-sized organ found in the upper left side of your abdomen, next to your stomach and behind your left ribs
Term: An organ that is part of the lymphatic system
lymphatic vessels
Definition: All regions of the body except the bone marrow, central nervous system, and tissues, such as the epidermis, that lack blood vessels
Term: A thin tube that carries lymph (lymphatic fluid) and white blood cells through the lymphatic system
Bone Marrow
definition: Found in the center of most bones and has many blood vessels
Term: The soft, spongy tissue that has many blood vessels and is found in the center of most bones
Antigens V. Antibodies
Antigens
Definition: A toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies.
Term: Any substance that causes the body to make an immune response against that substance
Antibodies
Definition: A blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen.
Term:A protein made by plasma cells in response to an antigen
Passive V. Active immunity
Passive immunity
Definition: The short-term immunity which results from the introduction of antibodies from another person or animal.
Term: A type of immunity that occurs when a person is given antibodies rather than making them through his or her own immune system
Active immunity
Definition: The immunity which results from the production of antibodies by the immune system in response to the presence of an antigen.
Term: Results when exposure to a disease organism triggers the immune system to produce antibodies to that disease
Lines of defense(1,2,3)
2nd defense
Definition: The non-specific phagocytes and other internal mechanisms that comprise innate immunity
Term: Non-specific innate responses
3rd defense
Definition: Provides immunity against specific pathogens
Term: Specific adaptive responses
1st defense
Definition: Defense against infection are the surface barriers that prevent the entry of pathogens into the body
Term: Physical and chemical barrier
