A Good Girl's Guide to Murder
Status
“We’ve all overreacted a bit. Everything’s fine; we just need to head back to the marquee.”
Pip is more status than support
She often assumes a leadership role, for example in the quote when she helps her friends after a moment of fright
She can be very rude when she doesn't like people, wants to show power over them “I think you’re a racist, intolerant, dickhead, mindless bottom-feeder”
She stands up for Ravi which shows a reversal of stereotypes as she is more status and he is more support. “Do you have a problem?”
She often takes charge in the investigation
Ravi is embarrassed when Pip stands up for him showing he doesn't want the attention and is more compromise than conflict
“I don’t know. Taking a nap. Taking a dump. Fuck knows”
Max is aggressive when speaking and defensive
Clear he seeks for status in conversation as he shouts and is defensive when threatened in any way
“Andie’s friendship was very destructive”
Andie is a bully and seeks for status, she does not care about those she appears to be close to and simply seeks to have status over them
She has traumatized her friends which is not typical of women in crime novels as they are usually the ones that are traumatized
It is clear that she seeks to be the most popular and the most liked, I think she also likes to have control over people
Support
you are literally incred! so soooo beaut” “give me your face”
Emma and Chloe very supportive of Andie in her comments
typical of women to compliment each others appearances
“Lauren wailed” “Lauren said tearfully”
At the start of the book Pip, Clara and Lauren demonstrate the importance of female friendships as they support Lauren through a breakup
Lauren in stereotypically emotional over breakup
Cara and Pip are very supportive of her
This is assumed to be a frequent occurrance
“Naomi’s face cracked as she tried to hold back her sobs”
Naomi is often very emotional and fragile, her speech features many non-fluency features
Support seeking, she does not want status in conversation
“Is your ankle swollen?”
Elliot seems very supportive, enquires after Pip and checks that she is ok by asking questions
Could be presumed to be an act considering he is the murderer of Sal
