Its ruins are found somewhere in between the modern city of Baghdad, Iraq, and the head of the Persian Gulf, south of the Euphrates River, on the edge of the al-Hajar Desert.

Sumerians believed that the universe was ruled by a pantheon (a temple dedicated to the gods) with a group of living beings that look like humans but are immortal and possess superhuman powers.
They believd these beings were invisible to human eyes, that they were the ones who guided and controlled the cosmos in accordance with well-laid plans.

Arts and architecture
Buildings were constructed in the Sumerian city states and perhaps the best known building were the ziggurats, pyramid structures with flat roofs.
They were usually built with sun-dried mud bricks that were ideal for the construction of ziggurats.

Many historians and archaeologists claim that the Sumerians were the first people to develop the wheel. It is thought that they used the wheel on chariots.
