EF report issue tree and hypothesis tree
How do we create a business model for an EF database that ensures it is useful/high impact and can be economically sustainable until at least 2030 [with no more than X amount of public funding]
-
There are 3 basic business models distinguished by their revenue source: fully funded by user fees, fully funded from public monies, and funded from a mix of

What is an EF Database?
What does it consist of? Hundreds of EF datasets across different areas e.g. energy, transport, packaging, chemicals, metals and minerals
-
What quality of data is there / is needed (what is quality?)? Quality depends on whether it's foreground or background data (i.e. used for analyses in the same sector vs as a secondary input for another sector). Respondents weren't informative on quality, so far have just said as high as possible
How is a database (or dataset) made? Dataset made by specialists integrating raw data produced by companies. Database compiles these either all together or via source nodes linking to other databases (e.g. integrating data from other private sector providers)
Who are the users?
What types of entity / person? LCA consultants (to deliver their services). Businesses and sector associations (to do internal analyses of their supply chains/products, comms etc). Policymakers (for policy design, implementation and checking compliance)
-
How many with what willingness to pay? No numbers but openness to increase payment from current levels for better access to more high quality datasets
Can one easily price discriminate amongst the types? Hyp: yes. Most existing databases have tiered pricing
How do they want to access the data? e.g. raw, API, as part of a model? Datasets compiled to compliant standards. Compatibility with major software like SimaPro and GaBi (another data standard). Some comments on visualisation etc but this seems nonessential

What is the lingo?
What is EF? Environmental footprint refers to the impact that human activities have on the environment. It is a measure of the amount of natural resources used and the amount of waste and pollution generated as a result of human actions such as manufacturing, transportation, energy consumption, and agriculture. In EU EF can more specifically refer to a formal standard for an evidence based assessment of environmental impact
How does it relate to LCA (what is that?) and carbon footprint? EF is the European standard for LCA which is the activity of Lifecyle Analaysis
What is a dataset vs a database? Dataset = individual set of EF data for e.g. 1kg of steel. Database is the entire platform containing hundreds of these for different resources e.g. dataset for 1kg steel, 1kg of polyurethane etc
What is the name for external data (datasets, databases, etc that is used as inputs to create the EF database? Raw data/input data/process data etc. No standard term
What is an "EF Dataset"? As above. dataset combining inputs, processes and other production factors e.g. transport into one package speaking to environmental impact for a given resource
