Florey & Chain

In 1940, first human trial was held on a policeman with septicaemia (blood poisoning) dose improved condition, then when it ran out he died
the active ingredient in the liquid produced by the mould was represented by 1 part per 2M - so lots was needed before human trial

NHS
-
Who enforced it's set up
-
-

Gained support from medical consultants by promising them a salary and allowing them to treat private patients in NHS buildings

Problems facing the NHS
Financial pressure
-
Other charges have been implemented such as eye tests and dentist appointments - Free eye-tests were re-introduced in Wales in 2007
-
As life-expectancy increases, greater pressure is put on the NHS
-
quality of care
-
Since 1999 NICE (National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence) has provided guidelines and recommendations for effective healthcare
-
New diseases
Became a huge problem in late 1900's because of outbreak of "super bugs" (MRSA) occasionally killing patients
-
-
Why was it created
2.Bombing raids in WW2 lead to many causalities needing treatment, prompting it's creation

medical & surgical
medical
smaller cheaper machines: Processes such as dialysis, where the blood of a patient's kidney failure is "washed" by a machine have become widely available as they are small and portable
robotics: Better prosthetic limbs, bombing injuries from Afghanistan and Iraq
-
surgical
laparoscopic (key hole) surgery: Using tiny cameras & narrow surgical equipment, surgeons can operate through a small incision, some distance from the body. Causes less trauma
robotic surgery: surgeon can use computers to control instruments inside the body, allowing more precise surgery. Operations can be performed on a tiny scale, with precision (eg. brain surgery)
microsurgery: The first kidney transplant was performed between identical twins in USA in 1956. Was able to happen because of microsurgery, attaching blood vessels & nerve endings

liberal reforms
-
-
-
response to the reforms
Friendly society's and insurance agencies prevented national health insurance from being given to widows
-
-
-
-
-
-
In the beginning of the 20th century Liberal party were in control, lead by David Lloyd George, thinking that poverty was a big problem in Britain
limitations
In 1930's Britain faced a huge economic depression & statistic shows areas hardest hit had an increased mortality rate
-
Unfair as only helped the employed, no widows or children
Key dates
-
-
-
-
-
1919: House projects such as "homes for heroes", financed through local authorities
-
1930: Housing act, cleared slums and replace them with counsil houses
-
Beveridge report
-
-
Also set out plans to improve housing, education, work conditions and create a national health service
-
The benefits system would be available for groups such as the unemployed // sick // retired // widows
The Beveridge report - 1942 recommended a government run benefits system to support people from cradle to grave
lung cancer
-
treatment
3.Radiotherapy: concentrated waves use to shrink tumour. If it's a small tumour, no surgery is required if larger it can prevent it from getting larger
4.Chemotherapy: injections of drugs to shrink the tumour before surgery, prevent it reoccurring or relieve symptoms if surgery isn't possible
2.Transplant: replace lungs with a healthy donor but raises ethical issue of should they be allowed a new lung if they ruined their's

Overveiw
During 19th century University of Dresden (Germany) kept records: 1% of all cancers were caused by lung tumour, By 1918 this increased to 10% and by 1927 rose to 14%
In 1950 - British Medical Research Council conclusively showed that rise in lung cancer was to do with smoking
Most lung cancers caused by external factors: 80% of people who contract it were smokers, also radon gas
By 1973 there were 26,000 deaths due to lung cancer

what helped discovery
-
teamwork
Wilkins shared clearer photographs, all work together on the structure of DNA
-
Crick & Watson made a model of DNA and showed it to Franklin, she edited it based on her x-rays
-
technology
Electron microscopes, first developed in 1931 by Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll.
-
Advances in microscopes and high powered images enabled scientists to identify DNA and start to examine how it's formed

lifestyle & health
-
-
diet
most people are familiar with eating a healthy balanced diet - plenty of fruit & veg with others in moderation
Two important substances are sugar & fat - too much sugar can lead ot type 2 diabetes & too much fat can lead ot heart disease
we now regonise that this is partly the truth - but in a very different way than previously suggested
-
-
smoking
Doctors now recognise smoking is connected with all kind of disease: high blood pressure // cancers // heart disease // gum disease // tooth decay
