1 CAUSES OF THE CONFLICT
There were several root causes behind this outbreak of war.
Nationalist rivalries
France and Germany, remained hostile because Prussians had defeated France
Imperialist ambitions
Germany had been left at a disadvantage relative to France and Great Britain
An aggressive diplomacy
Each power tried to protect its interests by seeking alliances with other nations
The arms race
The atmosphere of rivalry and imperialist ambitions, and diplomatic initiatives designed to prepare for war
WEAPONRY
It was the first war in which aviation played a fundamental role

Tanks
Armoured vehicles
German Zeppelins
Airships
Mustard gas
2 THE ALLIANCES
Two blocs of alliances were created
The Triple Alliance (1882)
Germany
Italy
Austria-Hungary
The Triple Entente (1907)
Russia
France
Great Britain
Also there were more countryes that entered to the war or that were invaded.
The United States entered the war in 1917
Belgium, Serbia and Montenegro were invaded by Germany and Austria-Hungary
Romania (1916) and Greece (1917) joined due to developments on the Balkan front.
Japan declared war on Germany (1914) due to its imperialist ambitions in Asia and the Pacific
