- - - - Backup: replicates documents and programs so that a backup copy of the data is still available even if the device crashes and the user loses their data. Backups can be initiated manually by a user or programmed to run automatically (often while the computer is not being used).
        
        Defragmentation: Data can be shattered and retained on a hard drive out of chronology, which may spread across several platters, cylinders, or even various disks. This shortens the time the hard drive's read/write head needs to discover the information.
