- - - - God has commanded Muslims to pray. God does not need their prayers but they must perform them.

      - Prayer reminds Muslims about the will of God and their beliefs and place in the world.
      - Spiritually clean before God – performing Wudu gets Muslims to think about their sins and seek forgiveness.
    - - Their body is clean and in a fit state to greet Allah in prayer.
      - They are praying all together as a community to thank and praise God – ummah. A Muslim can go to any mosque, anywhere in the world and join in.
      - Prayer movements – bowing to God reminds them how small they are compared to God and his power.
      - Everyone, physically, is facing Makkah.
    - - Reminded of the importance of their belief in God.
      - Making choices in their lives so they are mentally ready to praise God.
      - After Wudu they can leave their daily lives behind and focus on God during their prayer.
    - - Prayer may motivate a Muslim to fulfil God’s will and to remind them to follow the rules of Islam.
      - To ensure they follow an accurate prayer schedule they would need to be personally organised.

- - - - During Ramadan many Muslims will try to eat a large meal called suhur just before dawn.
      - When daylight is over, most Muslims will break or open the fast with dates or water, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad, before having a proper meal later.
      - The evening meals (Iftar/Futoor) during Ramadan are occasions for family and community get-togethers.

      - Communal celebration services held both outdoors+in mosques, there are processions through the streets + a special celebratory meal is eaten - first daytime meal Muslims will have had in a month

      - Literally means “festival of sacrifice”
      - QUOTE: “My son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you" (Surah)
    - - takes place at END of Hajj, on 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah in Islamic Calendar
      - lasts for 4 days
    - - Sacrifice of Isma'il - When Allah appeared to Ibrahim in a dream, asking him to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience, but was stopped by Allah + a lamb was sacrificed instead
    - - We remember Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son - a way of reminding Muslims of their devotion to Allah
      - Also important to remember that God DOES NOT want animals/its meat - he killed a lamb because he wants Muslims to show that they are obedient to him
    - - public holiday
      - visit friends, family
      - give presents
      - sacrifice sheep/goats - reminder of Ibrahim's obedience, is then shared w/ family + poor (each get ⅓ of share)
      - pray @ mosque - wear good clothes, ask for forgiveness for times they were not fully devoted - show they're prepared to sacrifice their lives for God
      - give charity to poor (they can celebrate too)
    - - both Sunni + Shia celebrate this festival
      - for Shia, the prayers on this day differ as they have only 2 not 5, there is no call to prayer (adhan)
  - - - reminds Muslims of the day when Nuh (Noah) left his ark and Musa (Moses) saved the Israelites from the Egyptians - SUNNI
      - For Shia, also significant as its the anniversary of the death of Hussein, who is venerated as an Imam, or the rightful leader of the Muslim community - SHIA
    - - 10th day of Muharram, first month of islamic lunar calendar
    - - Ashura marks the day God delivered the Israelites, led by Prophet Musa (Moses), from the tyranny of Egypt's Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea - thus allowing them to cross safely
      - For Shia, it is a special but very sad day which they focus solely on commemorating the death of Hussein in battle.
        Reflection on the massacre that killed Imam al-Husayn + his companions at Karbala.
        Shia try to focus on their actions being in the spirit of justice + on their dedication to the path of Allah by remembering what happened to Husayn through re-enactments+reciting eulogies to remember his life
    - - Sunni
        
        for sunni majority, day is marked w/ fasting, special prayers in mosques
        
        according to Qur'an, God commanded Moses to strike the sea w/ his staff, causing it to part
        Moses then started fasting on the day of Ahura as a form of worship+gratitude to God for saving himself+his followers
        
        Muhammad encouraged Muslims to fast on the 9th of Muharram asw as the 10th, in order to differentiate Muslims from other faiths.
        Whilst the fast is optional, many Muslims choose to observe it
      - Shia
        
        For Shia, Hussein's martyrdom represents paying the ultimate price in the pursuit of justice+righteouness, he is thus mourned to this day at his shrine in Karbala, as well as in mourning ceremonies across the Muslim world
        
        Hussein was Prophet Muhammads grandson
        
        Shia rites on the day incl colourful plays re-enacting the battle's events, w/ the faithful taking on the role of Hussein+his followers as they took on Umayyad forces loyal to the Caliph Yazid I
        
        During the period of Muharram, Shia worshippers will often wear black as a symbol of mourning + sadness, many will take this time as an opportunity to derive lessons from Hussein's life

      - Strengthening Islam
      - Protecting the freedom of Muslims to practise their faith
      - Protecting Muslims against oppression, which could include overthrowing a tyrannical ruler
      - Punishing an enemy who breaks an oath
      - Putting right a wrong
    - - sane Muslim men, not boys, whose families can cope without them.
      - Soldiers on the battlefield must fight, running away is wrong.
      - If a town is attacked, everyone must fight back.
      - If a leader declares a war then Muslims have a duty to join an army and fight.
      - Not all Muslims have to fight. Muhammad said one man from each two should fight, so there will still be men to defend and look after the towns and villages.
- - - - carrying out these obligations provides the framework of a Muslim's life
      - No matter how sincerely a person may believe, Islam regards it as pointless to live life without putting that faith into action and practice.
      - Carrying out the Five Pillars demonstrates that the Muslim is putting their faith first, and not just trying to fit it in around their secular lives.
