Set expectations — Tell the students that you will be transitioning to the library and what the expectations are for movement to and from the library. Remind them of the importance of being respectful of school property, and to be quiet in the library.
Get necessary items — Before leaving the classroom, make sure the students have everything they need, such as library cards, books that need to be returned, or something to carry library books.
Line up nicely and walk to the library — Have the students line up quietly and remind them again of the expectations for the trip to the library. Begin walking to the library.
Entering the library & book selection — Remind students of expectations for how much time they have to select books, and the number of books they can check out. Also, remind them again about how to care for library books.
Return to the classroom — Once all students have selected their books, they should walk back to the classroom in an orderly manner. They will check out their books after reading time. (See Returning to the Classroom for next steps)
The use of the library would not be possible in a virtual class. For special needs students, they could need modified instruction. Depending on their capabilities, an alternative to visiting the library might be needed. For ESL students, they would needs some additional support in terms of where to find books that are the appropriate level.
