The Rock Cycle
-
1. Igneous Rock
Magma rises from mantle.
It may become trapped beneath the surface and cools very slowly. This is known as intrusive igneous rock.
If it breaks through the surface it begins to cool as it hits the air. This is known as extrusive igneous rock
Examples: Granite (Intrusive igneous) - Multi-coloured, used for countertops, gravestones, can be found in the Dublin-Wicklow and Mourne mountains
Basalt: (Extrusive igneous) - Grey/Black in colour, crushed basalt is used in road building. Can be found in Antrim - the Giant's Causeway

Oldest rock type
Formed when igneous or sedimentary rocks are put under great heat (from magma) or pressure (from folding) - it changes into a new, harder rock.
Example: Marble - formed when limestone is put under great heat and pressure. Usually white but can be green or black. Used in making headstones, fireplaces. White marble found in Malin Head, Co.Donegal. Black marble in Killarney.
Quartzite - formed when sandstone comes under great heat and pressure. Grey to white in colour, very hard texture. Used in surfacing roads, watches and in glass. Found at the top of the Sugarloaf in Co. Wicklow & Croagh Patrick in Co. Mayo.
