        The hardships of slavery was very apparent. The descriptions used by the author was terrifying. Douglas watched his own aunt being tormented and whipped. " He was a cruel man, hardened by a long life of slaveholding. He would at times seem to take great pleasure in whipping a slave. I have often been awakened at the dawn of day by the most heart-rending shrieks of an own aunt of mine, whom he used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her naked back till she was literally covered with blood. No words, no tears, no prayers, from his gory victim, seemed to move his iron heart from its bloody purpose. The louder she screamed, the harder he whipped; and where the blood ran fastest, there he whipped longest."
        
        The Salem Witch trials caused very many hardships. Many people would get accused of committing witchcraft and it resulted in chaos. The trauma and fear instilled into the public was major. "He has wanted his Incarnate Legions to Persecute us, as the People of God have in the other Hemisphere been Persecuted: he has therefore drawn forth his more spiritual ones to make an attacque upon us."

        When talking about important leaders in the community, Dubois only refers to men. He was acknowledging the power that important black men could have, without considering women as leaders. "The Negro race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men. The problem of education, then, among Negroes must first of all deal with the Talented Tenth; it is the problem of developing the Best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the Worst, in their own and other races. Now the training of men is a difficult and intricate task." Throughout the whole text, he repeats the word "men" very many time implying that they were expected to pick everyone up and take the lead.

        Abigail Adams is pushing for more rights for women. She understands that women at the time were underappreciated on a wider scale. "I have sometimes been ready to think that the passion for Liberty cannot be Eaquelly Strong in the Breasts of those who have been accustomed to deprive their fellow Creatures of theirs."
- - - - Andrew Carnegie was a philanthropist with the idea that you should help people with your wealth. "In bestowing charity, the main consideration should be to help those who will help themselves; to provide part of the means by which those who desire to improve may do so; to give those who desire to rise the aids by which they may rise; to assist, but rarely or never to do all." - - - - In Far's text, the telephone is just an example of modern communication and an advancement in technology. It allowed them to be connected, although they were not physically there.
    - - Roosevelt explains the advancements in America and how the men are changing in perspective to their societies.
  - - - Henry Ford's "anti- semetic" beliefs were a smaller part of the whole idea of anti-immigration to the U.S. People like him thought the threat of new immigrants was a threat towards traditional American values and the identity. "In some quarters, such as anti-immigrant and nativist groups, the series confirmed their own beliefs."
    - - In the Chinese Exclusion Act it expresses the restriction of immigrants from China. It was another trend of anti- immigration. People were concerned about having new immigrants entering their country. "This act provided an absolute 10-year ban on Chinese laborers immigrating to the United States."
    - - Ross' explains the different cultural changes by having immigration. People brought their own languages and were also expected to adapt to America. "It is plain that optimists who imagine that assimilation of the immigrant is proceeding unhindered are living in a fool's paradise"
- - - - Malcolm X displayed civil activism by speaking against the ongoing racial inequalities and fighting for black self-determination. "We have this in common: We have a common oppressor, a common exploiter, and a common discriminator. But once we all realize that we have this common enemy, then we unite on the basis of what we have in common." Malcolm X was an influencer who inspired people to take a stand against oppression. He created a movement that many people got behind.
  - - - MLK used peaceful methods to change the society. He wanted equality between the whites and the blacks. MLK used non-violent tactics such as protesting and boycotting. He thought these peaceful gestures was the best approach to defeat racial injustice in the country. "In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist, negotiation, self-purification and direct action. We have gone through all of these steps in Birmingham."

        Bradatan describes America as a place where one can potentially pursue their aspirations. The opportunity America gives is infinite, which ties in with the American Dream.
      - Marco Rubio talks about the opportunities his family was granted once they moved to America. He was born to Cuban immigrant parents who sacrificed in order to achieve the American Dream. Through hard work, him and his family capitalized on their opportunity to become successful in a new country. "He wanted all the dreams he once had for himself to come true for us. He wanted all the doors that closed for him to be open for me."

        Henry Thoreau talks about the freedom we have, where we can vote and disagree with unjust laws. The individuals have the option to openly follow their conscious and personal beliefs. " I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right."
        
        Declaration of Independence / Thomas Jefferson
        
        The declaration of Independence displays how Americans have freedom. It states that all men are created equal with rights as well. "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." This quote shows how the people are in charge.
