Chapter 1: The Scientific Endeavor
What is science?
Science is the study of natural phenomena in the world
What is the nature of scientific knowledge ?
science is evidence based
Quantitative data
Involves senses and measurements taken using instruments
Qualitative data
Involves using our senses which are sight , hearing , touch , smell, taste
Science engages in scientific research
Science is all about being curious so we can learn about the world better
In a scientific investigation we need a hypothesis and variables
Conducting experiments and testing solutions- accuracy , precision and errors
Types of errors
What are the values should all scientists have ?
Difference between accuracy and precision
Accuracy refers to how close readings is to the acceptable value
while precision refers to how close a reading is to the same thing are to each other
Parallax error
When we are using measuring instruments we should avoid parallax errors and instead look at the measurement from eye level to achieve the most accurate answer
controlled variable
Dependent variable
the first variable you should have :independent variable
How do we practice science ?
Designing scientific investigations
All scientists should have perseverance , curiosity , creativity and responsibility
