was not coherent & unified movement
mainly worked / was most successful at a local level

lead to long term radicalisation of long established civil rights groups like NAACP
lead to NAACP accepting slowing of segregation in return for more control over black schooling
its effectiveness compared to non violent protest

in some cases gained concessions at the cost of worsening the overall reputation of the movement
did not gain as much large scale change as non violent protest
was still usefull in that there was an impact on the small scale communities , just not massive country wide change
a unified force pushing for the same change in the same way is more effective than fragmented groups pushing for similar but different change with different methods

created Lowndes County Freedom Organisation, as black people who had the vote didnt want to vote for white southerners
said non violent protest was not working
wanted radicalisation of SNCC and exclusion of white campaigners
suggested "black power" slogan which gained popularity
malcolm X's ideas for progress in civil rights
believed non violent protest would no longer work
white people should not be involve in civil rights movement
did not believe white politicians would ever do more than they were forced to do
began to soften opinion shortly before assassination
the work of the black panthers
created 1966
worked in black communities
organised community projects like free breakfast for schoolchildren
carrying guns gained government attention
the progress of the movement past 1965
worked on a local / small scale level
became more radical
large scale change slowed down
still a lack of complete unity in movement
