Blackout- a lighting cue where all stage lights go off simultaneously
Build- increase light levels
Gobo- thin metal plate cut out in pattern and placed in a lantern to project pattern or shape into the acting area
Level- intensity of light
Under lighting- when the lighting is positioned below the subject, creating highlights on certain features
Overhead lighting- when the lighting is positioned below the subject, creating highlights on certain features
Side lighting- when the lighting is positioned to the side of the subject, creating a split effect
Hard lighting- more focused and produces harsher shadows
Soft light- tends to wrap around objects, projecting diffused shadows with soft edges
Lantern- stage light
Cross fade ( X fade or XF)- bringing another light face up to completely replace current light state
Iris- device in lantern allowing beam size to be altered
Gel- coloured lighting film
Flood- to wash the stage with general lighting, created using a basic box shaped lantern with a simple reflector
Focus- adjustment of lighting
Fresnel- adjustable spot light, concentric circle construction gives diffused light
Flash- flashed for effect
Follow spot- large profile spotlight with operator
Strobe- flashing light
Shutter- device in lanterns used to shape the beam
Profile spot- Lantern which can produce hard or soft light
