Literary Connection to the Quote: Ryūnosuke Akutagawa was a Japanese writer who wrote a short story called The Spider's Thread. In the story, a robber is sent to hell, but by chance is given a way out. From the heavens descended a spider's thread for the robber to climb up. For sparing a spider's life when the robber was still alive, the Buddha had sent down the thread into hell for the robber to climb. As the robber accends, so do all the other sinners in hell. The thread then snaps, sending all of them, the robber includes, falling back into the depths of hell. (It's a really famous story in Japan, and is referenced in anime.) There are parallels to be drawn between this story and Edwards' quote.
