Death and the Afterlife
-
Hell
Traditional view
NT portrays hell as eternal fire (Mark 9:43) where both body and soul can be destroyed (Matthew 10:28) and where there will be 'weeping and gnashing of teeth' (Matthew 22:13)
-
-
C.S Lewis considered hell as eternal seperation from God, source of all good
-

-
Other understandings
Some downplay idea of hell as place for body and refer to it as spiritual state for the soul - language of bible symbolic
Focusing on hell as physical place can make christians lose sight of significance of teaching - something to be avoided by choices people make
-
-
Guilty conscience will be felt on judgement day - focus on actions that led to not achieving salvation
-
However this seems to equate it with idea of feelings we go through in difficult times and seems to not accept idea of afterlife
-
Purgatory
Key words
Redemption - having a debt paid off; in christian contexts, the debt of original sin

-
Hick (1922-2012)
-
-
Inspired by belief that no single religion is true and all people, in own cultural way, try to come closer to the divine
-
Criticised for seeming to make good moral choices pointless - why bother being good on earth if heaven guaranteed? Also, do we have free will if we have no choice but to be with god?
-
Hick would argue his view preserves central message of christianity as the entire message of Jesus is to seek reconciliation and life in all its fullness
