Religious views: relationships and families
Christan views towards human sexuality
Heterosexual relationships are ideal
The bible teaches that heterosexual relationships are part of Gods plan
Catholic teaches that homosexuality is 'intrinsically disordered'
Some Christians believe that homosexual relationships are just as holy as heterosexual relationships
Buddhist views towards human sexuality
Do not oppose homosexual relationships
Their main concern is that the sex is not harmful to anyone
Marriage is not sacred in Buddhism, it is a social act
Homosexual relationships are no different from heterosexual relationships
Buddhist monks are celibate (no sex)
Christian views on sex before marriage/adultery
Catholics/Church of England teach that sex before marriage is a sin
Some liberal Christians may believe that sex before marriage is ok
Adultery breaks the vows made before God and the 10 commandments
Sex should not be casual, temporary pleasure
Buddhist views on sex before marriage/adultery
Most believe that sex before marriage is acceptable
Causing harm to others through sex (eg STIs) is wrong
Adultery is unskilful because it involves deceit and causes harm
Some Buddhists wait until marriage to have sex for cultural reasons
Christian views on contraception
Catholics believe that artifical contrapceiton is sinful because it goes against procreation (the main purpose of having sex)
Natural methods (eg rhythm/abstinence) are permitted
Anglicans believe contrapcetion allows couples to limit their number of children to care for them and develope their relationship (a good thing)
Buddhist views on contraception
Most believe contraception is acceptable
The morning after pill is killing because the zygote has already formed (breaks 1st precept)
No obligation to have children
Some contraception can prevent STIs
Christian views on marriage
Marriage is a gift from God
It is an agreement before God to live faithfully 'until death do us apart'
Catholics/orthodox are against cohabitation as it is disrespectful
Marriage is a spiritual bond
It provides a place to raise children, enjoy sex, and create a secure/stable environment
'be fruitful and multiply'
Buddhist views on marriage
Marriage is a social act rather than something sacred
Homosexual marraiges are ok
Marriages help the wellbeing of the community and society
Christian views on divorce/remarriage
Jesus taught that those who divorced (unless they were victims of adultery) were committing adultery
Marriage vows were made 'till death do us part'
Catholic marriage is a sacrament
Remarriage is impossible whilst your partner is alive
For some Christians (such as angelicans), divorce is the lesser of 2 evils
Buddhist views on divorce/remarriage
Buddhists tend to disapprove of divorce - even though there are no teachings against it
Clinging to a marriage that produces suffering goes against teachings, so divorce may be acceptable if reconciliation is not possible
Christian views on the purpose of families
Stability for bringing up children
Secure, stable environment
Members of a family offer protection and support
Educating children in a faith from a young age
Christian parents should be good role models and teach their children about Christianity
Buddhist views on the purpose of families
Teach their children about Buddhist beliefs/practices
Good morals
Some Buddhists send their children to monasteries
Christan views on gender/sex equality
All people were made in the image of God
Jesus taught to 'love thy neighbour'
Jesus treated women with respect, and had women disciples
However, women cannot be priests in the Catholic church
Buddhist views on gender/sex equality
Men/women should be equal status
Gender discrimination expresses a lack of loving
Women are nuns (good thing), however sometimes nuns are secondary to monks (bad thing)
One teaching says that Buddhists must be reborn as men before they can reach enlightenment
