Clash of Philosophies
First half of the 1800s, three schools of political thought fought for supremacy in European societies
Each school had a different philosophies, goals, and followers. They also believed in different styles of government that would best serve the people.
Liberal: Mostly middle-class business leaders and merchants. Wanted more power to elected parliaments, but only the educated and landowners could vote.
Conservative: wealthy property owners and nobility. Argued for protecting the traditional monarchies of Europe.

Radical: Favored drastic change to extend democracy. Believed governments should practice the ideals of the French Revolution; liberty, equality, and brotherhood.
Some radicals believed in anarchism, a belief that the government is harmful and not needed.

Identity: The Values, cultures and traditions that an individual or group or people identify with. This is shown through the values and traditions of the political groups of this time.
