Mind Map #7
What are the main points of the text?
Tip of the ice berg
Shine, the only black person on the Titanic, noticed a leak while in the boiler room and his warnings went unheard until the reality of the issue was seen by more affluent (white) individuals. He decided to save himself and was dealt coping mechanisms that harmed his physical and mental health through drinking and other harmful health behavior.
The dynamic quality of race
Relationships of minorities and majorities have been institutionalized over time (poverty and race)
Bringing up health disparities in relation to socioeconomic resources for race/ethnicity leads to a potential over exaggeration of resources and human-capitol investment to health. Meaning if we give resources to those who can't pay, the people in charge of said resources get no profit.
Matter of measurement
If Black Americans had 6x's increase of income, then they would be on the same playing field as White Americans. Whites built their wealth off of black slave labor. Laws back in the 50's and 60's helped Whites build their value from discriminating Blacks and their ability to purchase home in suburban areas.
Institutionalized racism
Race/ethnicity and health reconsidered
Once these two ideas are introduced into topic of discussion they become politically charged because of how close it works with SES
Toward a new conceptual framework
Table 1 shows a new framework embodies the "likeliness" ethnoracial biases
What was the authors purpose?
Jay Pearson
Health is equal to socioeconomic status and the point of the study is to take the standard of health and money off of white people and expose the relationship those factors have in comparison to other demographics. With the focus on white people, black people consistently experience disadvantages in health creating disparities.
Do I agree with the author?
I do agree with the author and I believe I have been trying to portray this exact idea in my own work, but didn't know it was already a "framework" that has been studied before. The idea of the American Dream is blocked to certain people who are seen as a negative statistic to the high SES majority. The incongruent sociocultural orientation is what is preventing the progressive idea of equity. I feel like this study has helped find a more educated way of explaining the pressing issues at hand.
Resistant sociocultural response
Stereotypes that have never been changed and show no progression for justice from the oppressive system
Traditional sociocultural orientation
Relates to the Salmon Bias and the Healthy Immigrant paradox
Incongruent sociocultural orientation
Depending on your scope of practice for work and education and how it correlates with your education, you will be judged a certain way based off the ethnicity that you are
