“At first, just one, a glossy purple clot”
The ripe blackberries were lovely
The blackberries needed heavy rain and sun to ripen
“Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins and jam pots”
The hunger made them go to pick more
They went out with pots and tins to pick them
“Our palms sticky as Bluebeard's”
Thorn pricks would be stuck in their hands
Picking blackberries would leave your hands sticky
“The juice was stinking too”
The fruit went off fast once off the bush
The blackberries had gone sour a few days after being picked
“I always felt like crying. It wasn’t fair”
Nothing gold can stay
The poet felt very sad, he didn’t want the blackberries to go off
“You ate the first one and it’s flesh was sweet like thickened wine”
The first blackberry hit the spot
The first blackberry was delicious
“But when the bath was filled we found a fur”
Fresh fruit doesn’t last forever
They found a “rat-grey fungus” fur had grown on the blackberries
“We trekked and picked until the cans were full”
