Genetic Variation
Crossing over
During prophase I, homologous chromosome pairs are in close proximity to each other.
Each gene on one pair of sister chromatids line up corresponding to the genes on the adjacent sister chromatids.
-
Independent assortment
During metaphase I, the lining up of chromosomes is by chance.
Homologous chromosomes are not identical, but contain similar DNA. (ie. code for the same thing)

Mitosis vs. Meiosis
Function
Mitosis: Growth, repair, maintenance.
Meiosis: Produce gametes, genetic variation.
