CAP
Bacteria causing CAP:
streptococci pnemunomi-
most common
gram +ve cocci
moraxella catarrhalis
atypical- no cell wall
unaffected by antibiotics which bind to cell wall
haemophilus influenza
Drugs/ antibiotics used:
Benzylpenicillin- for ONLY Streptococci
IV only
Amoxcillin
Oral
or IV.. oral good for CAP
Amoxcillin-clavulanic acid
works against all but atypical bacteria
clavulnic acid makes it stable to the beta lactamse enzymes from moraxella
Aztreonma: covers gram -ve
combined with
Vancomycin: covers gram +ve
used if penicillin allergy
